Trauma Informed Therapy (PTSD)

The impact that trauma can have on the totality of an individual is undeniable. No matter how large or small the trauma may seem, given a lack of opportunity to heal and integrate, a trauma can create dysfunction in the brain and body that limit you from experiencing love, satisfaction, contentment, and connection. One does not have to have been in the combat of war to have experienced a trauma. Trauma can be the sudden death of a loved one, a car accident, a difficult breakup, domestic violence, the experience of a natural disaster, and so on. It is important to explain that vicarious trauma can occur for an individual who is witness to a trauma happening to someone else and that vicarious trauma can create post-traumatic stress (PTSD) as well. One can consider an event a trauma if he/she continues to experience a level of stress following the event that proves difficult to manage. Symptoms of prolonged post-traumatic stress are (but not limited to):

  • difficulty sleeping

  • flashbacks of the event

  • nightmares

  • hypervigilance (the feeling of always being ‘on guard’)

  • avoiding persons, places and things that remind the individual of the event

  • emotional disconnection

  • inability to connect with loved ones

  • lost on interest in things that once brought him/her pleasure

  • increased substance use/addictive behavior

  • dissociation or ‘feeling out of one’s body or not connected to reality’
